When is electricity cheapest in Ireland?
It depends on your plan. On a flat rate the price never changes. On a smart, night-rate or EV tariff, off-peak hours can cost less than half the day rate, and those cheap hours line up closely with the greenest, windiest hours.
Flat rate vs smart tariff
If you’re on a standard flat rate, timing your usage cuts your carbon but not your bill, you pay the same at 3am as at 6pm. The saving only appears on a time-of-use plan, where the supplier charges less off-peak. That’s why the plan matters as much as the timing.
Night and EV tariffs
Night-rate and EV tariffs give a cheap block (often around 2am to 6am, or a wider EV window). If you can move your EV charge and some appliances into that block, the savings add up quickly.
Line it up with the grid
Cheap hours and green hours usually coincide, both are driven by low demand and high wind. Watch the live carbon figure and set your timers for the clean, cheap window.
