When should you charge your EV in Ireland?
An EV is the biggest load you can move. Charging in the green, cheap overnight window instead of the evening peak can roughly halve the cost and the carbon of every charge.
Aim for the overnight window
On an EV tariff the cheap block is usually a few hours after midnight, which is also when demand is low and wind often high, so it’s the greenest too. Set a departure/charge schedule in the car or charger for that window.
Let a smart charger do it
A smart charger can automatically track cheap and green hours and charge then, without you thinking about it. It’s the simplest way to always charge at the best time.
The numbers
A typical home EV charge is 30 to 60 kWh. On a plan where off-peak is half the day rate, shifting every charge off-peak can save hundreds of euro a year, and cut the carbon per charge in step with the live grid figure on the front page.
